According to statisticalatlas.com, Marlton is the third most populated city in Burlington County, New Jersey. Marlton has a total geographic area of 3.235 square miles and is located within Evesham Township, New Jersey, zip code 08053.
This piece of Evesham Township is a census-designated geography most commonly referred to as “Marlton.” While reengineered to a large grade-separated interchange, the Marlton Circle, at the intersection of Route 70 and Route 73 was at one time considered to be the most widely recognized landmark as it is a throughway between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Atlantic City, New Jersey.
According to data.io, Marlton has a population of 9,900 people. Although the name “Marlton” did not appear until the early 19th century, it was actually founded as early as 1676 by Welsh and English farmers. As farmers, the soil was an important piece of the economy, and as such, the name Marlton was born from marl clay, which is commonly found in the soil.
Marl Clay was instrumental in the “building boom” of the 1830s and 1840s, and was continually excavated until 1930. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Burlington City and Atlantic City, New Jersey purchased marl from Marlton and it was shipped by rail. Marl clay was considered to be an alternate for green manure, water treatment amendment and semi-flowable fill.
